World Cup score: Spain eliminated as Morocco advance to quarterfinal thanks to Yassin Bounou’s penalty heroics

Morocco entered the FIFA 2022 World Cup qualifiers after a 3-0 penalty shootout win over Spain at the Education City Stadium on Tuesday. After 120 minutes of thrilling football, the Atlas Lions won from the spot thanks to Yassin Bounou. Paulo Sarabia and Carlos Soler were prevented from a place like the captain. Simon came close to giving Morocco a decisive goal at the time but he made up for it with a fine save that effectively sent the game to penalties. Pablo Sarabia came and hit the post at the death, but it was not enough and went down to the spot.

This is when Bounou wrote himself into Moroccan football history with three saves to deny Sarabia, Carlos Soler, and Sergio Busquets a day after Dominik Livakovic made three saves to help Croatia be successful. Simon denied Badr Benoun but it was no big deal and it was fitting that Hakimi stepped up to score against his hometown team.

Lus Enrique is Spain’s only fault after their fast start against Costa Rica with a draw against Germany and a loss to Japan quickly ended their promise and left them out in the kind of humble.
