Donald Trump has finally lost his battle to block Democratic-led House committees from obtaining his tax returns, prompting investigators to sprint with Democratic lawmakers to review them before the next congressional swearing-in.
Trump, who has spent years trying to protect his tax returns from being released, suffered a final defeat on Tuesday, ironically at the hands of the conservative majority he installed on the Supreme Court.
Meanwhile, prosecutors in New York await a verdict in a tax fraud trial against the Trump Organization.
In Washington, Dr Anthony Fauci, a member of the Trump Covid response team who has become a prime target of the mega-right, held his final press conference on Tuesday as director of the nation’s top agency for combating the pandemic.
Dr Fauci’s tenure at NIAID led to him being celebrated as a hero among Democrats and many other Americans who viewed him as a key source of information on the government’s efforts to combat Covid-19.
Judge warns Trump to consult lawyer days before E. Jean Carroll is expected to file rape case
A federal judge has warned Donald Trump to decide on his lawyers ahead of a lawsuit from author E. Jean Carroll, who alleges Trump raped her in a Manhattan department store in the 1990s.
On Tuesday, an excerpt of her memoir published in New York magazine was first aired as false and an attempt to publicize it, and the warning came during a conference call in a defamation lawsuit filed by Ms. Carroll after Trump called the author’s allegations.
