Snow, extreme cold expected to move into Omaha area Wednesday-Thursday

Things are going to really start to go downhill in Metro Omaha. We are now under a winter storm warning. Runs until 7pm Friday night. This includes all counties in pink and above in Carroll, Crawford, and Ottoman counties. Those counties in orange. These will be upgraded. Starting at noon tomorrow, people here have upgraded to a blizzard warning. Right now, it’s still under a winter storm warning. So here are the storm forecasters for the entire afternoon. This mod tries to bring some freezing drizzle in the snow. But as we’ve already seen this morning, it’s mostly light snow. As a result, small snow showers continued on and off throughout the afternoon. In the evening, night driving plans may involve some minor buildup in slippery conditions. But by the time we get to 9:00 the wind will start to pick up and start to see an intrusion of arctic air. So conditions worsened, especially after 9pm, so light snow and possibly some bent snow would disappear overnight. Then most of the content disappears from here around 4:00am. So, in the 9pm to 4am window, we’ll see a lot of snow at OMAHA METRO. But even after the snow recedes, we will still see the impact of blowing snow conditions with wind and extreme cold tomorrow morning. With this early Thursday, we’re likely to see the worst travel conditions yet in Metro Omaha. In terms of snowfall totals, still think 3 to 5 mostly south and east of metro Omaha, 1 to 3 to the west, I think it’s about 3 here in Omaha. It all depends on how these bands end up. If we’re under it, we’re a little higher, without it we’re a little lower. But anyway, with the wind and cold coming, expect those effects, especially as we head into Thursday morning. The cold will continue into the holiday weekend. A wind chill warning is in effect tonight. Stay with us Saturday noon. Most of the time we see what it feels like to be 30 to 40 degrees below zero. Now it’s the upper seven radar. I could see a small snow patch moving east from I-29 in Bellevue towards Trainor and Silver City. So expect a little less snow. You can see the visibility is reduced a bit. Haven’t really seen the accumulation of light matter this morning, but from our vantage point at Memphis Women’s Hospital, it’s stuck to the roof and some cars here. Now EPPLEY has light snow and a breeze of 14 degrees. Feel like one. But hey, it feels like too much right now. It’s above zero and well above zero. In our south we have more winds from the south. So we’re still going to crank those up a little bit in the afternoon, midday. But watch what happens when we go early evening. The wind weakens, then blows from the northwest, then gradually strengthens. So when that happens, we’re going to see these really worsen. So you can still get around while driving at night. But again, be aware of the slick conditions. It’s past nine o’clock. When we see the intrusion of arctic air, I get the severe impact icon. The temperature of the wind has increased, and the temperature of the snow has also increased a little. Again, traveling later tonight, especially Thursday morning, won’t be great around the metro area. There is still some scattered light snow around Nebraska and Iowa. More snow is falling in the west, which is back where the air is at its coldest right now, in Rapid City, nine degrees below, six degrees below. Here, it’s just the air temperature. So it’s right on our doorstep. So this low pressure will get closer and closer, make this arctic front go through the snow, the intrusion of extremely cold air, and then come back to the back again, blowing the snow. A worrisome tomorrow and then more blizzard-like conditions for much of Iowa as we head into Thursday. The winter storm is expected to move into the Omaha area Wednesday through Thursday. The winter storm warning will be in effect from noon Wednesday to 7 p.m. Friday. A wind chill warning is also in effect for eastern Nebraska and western Iowa from 12 a.m. Thursday to noon Saturday. Light snow is expected to move into the Omaha area in the afternoon after Wednesday morning’s cold weather. Slippery roads can occur during afternoon and evening commutes. The worst is expected after 9pm on Wednesday as arctic air moves in and northwesterly winds strengthen. Snow and blowing snow could cause a brief snow cover overnight. The Omaha area could see 2 to 4 inches of snow, with most of the snow falling by 4 a.m. Snowfall could be even greater in western Iowa. Travel conditions will be worst on Thursday morning. Continued strong winds expected to gust up to 40 mph, blowing snow and extreme cold will create dangerous driving conditions for the remainder of Thursday and Friday. With the wind chill warning, it feels like temperatures will remain between -30 and -40 degrees. Exposure to these dangerously low temperatures and wind chill can cause frostbite in as little as 10 minutes.
