Jeremy Allen White Gained 40 Pounds of Muscle for ‘The Iron Claw’

Jeremy Allen White is already the internet’s guy thanks to his addition to FX’s beloved Bear, but that fame will only increase when White packs on a few pounds of muscle for A24’s Iron Claw. White stars as wrestler Kerry Von Erich in the Sean Durkin-directed drama starring Zac Efron and Harris Dickinson. The actor told GQ magazine that he is packing on 40 pounds of muscle for the role.

“Iron Claw” tells the tragic true story of the von Erich wrestling troupe. Kerry Von Erich’s career was derailed after a motorcycle accident left her right leg amputated. Kerry later committed suicide. White said there is a similarity between Carrey and Carmi, the chef she plays in Bear.

“There’s something about someone who never feels like you’re your own person,” White said. “All great drama is about family, be it blood or otherwise. It’s about acceptance, it’s about belonging and escaping loneliness.”

Zac Efron went viral on social media thanks to his photos on the set of Iron Claw. Efron wrote that White was “really cute writing” after being cast in the film. The letter reads: “Exercise, eat, keep doing what you’re doing, stay strong.”

The film is one of many projects White has been excited about since the incredible success of The Bear. White said after the show’s success, “four A24 scripts” came across his desk and “Iron Claw” was chosen.

According to GQ , White’s career took a turn after “The Bear,” when “Katherine Bigelow invited him to lunch so she could bounce some project ideas from him. “I had four A24 scripts on my desk,” says White. He heard from a friend that another of his idols, Dustin Hoffman, loved the show so much he wanted to send White a handwritten letter.”

White’s career resurgence surprises even him, as he played Philip “Lip” Gallagher on Showtime’s Shameless for 11 seasons and 134 episodes over 10 years. White admitted earlier this year that he was left in a “frustrating headspace” when the show ended after ten years.

“I love Shameless so much. I love everyone who was a part of it and the experience was amazing,” White said. “But I’m not sure the shows are going to last that long… There was a point where I stopped feeling like an actor and started feeling like I was here to do this show.”

White added: “It was disappointing to be here. By the time it was over, I was questioning: Maybe I’m in this show. What else is there? Am I an actor? When I finished Shameless, I was very skeptical.”

Expect A24’s Iron Claw to debut in 2023.
