But after Pugh landed her first starring role, she was told by executives that she needed to lose weight and change her image if she wanted to succeed. In an interview with The Telegraph, the actor recalled his experience in the industry.

The British star explained that when he was 19, he traveled to the United States to audition for new TV shows and was accepted as an aspiring musician in the failed pilot Studio City. But the executives working on the series wanted her to change her appearance as part of the job.

Pugh said, “Everything they tried to change about me—my weight, my looks, the shape of my face, the shape of my eyebrows—it wasn’t what I wanted or the industry. I wanted to work.”

The actor felt like he knew what to expect after starring in The Fall, but the contrast surprised him.

Pugh continued, “I thought the movie business was going to be like this [my experience of making] “Falling,” but really, that’s what the top of the game looked like, and I felt like I made a big mistake.”

The show never got past the pilot stage and Pugh returned to Britain, where she starred in William Oldroyd’s Lady Macbeth, which rekindled the actor’s love of film.

He added: “It made me fall in love with cinema again – the kind of cinema where you could have an opinion and be loud, and I was hooked.”

Pugh’s career has blossomed since then, most recently starring in Olivia Wilde’s Don’t Worry Darling alongside Harry Styles, Chris Pine, Gemma Chan and Nick Kroll. Due to the director’s relationship with Styles, Pugh was rumored to have had an altercation with Wilde on the film, which ended in a shouting match.

The star will next be seen in Netflix’s period drama Marvel, as well as Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer and Dune: Part Two in 2023.
