Don’t judge a book by its cover: 2 dog best friends need forever home for Christmas

NORTH MYRTLE BEACH, SC (WBTW) – Jake and Simba have been at the North Myrtle Beach Humane Society for almost a year now and they want to find their forever home this Christmas.

The pair are not blood brothers, but they are close friends who have spent their entire lives together and are inseparable. They ended up in the humane society because their owners had a new baby and they could no longer give Jake and Simba the attention they deserved.

Meagan Pitman, marketing director for the North Myrtle Beach Humane Society, said there is interest in adoption, but one thing always holds potential adopters back.

“We get a lot of attention in Simba. People see it and say, “I want that.” I understand. She’s beautiful,” Pitman said. “And then when we say, ‘Oh, he’s a couple with his brother Jake,’ they look at Jake, and unfortunately Jake was considered the ugly duckling, which is unfortunate because Jake is so cute and he’s so handsome.”

The sad truth about Jake and Simba is that the adopters are immediately interested in Simba, but when they find out they have to adopt him with Jake, they back off because they think Jake is ugly.

“Unfortunately, the thing that prevents them from being adopted right now is that people don’t like the way Jake looks, that’s not the reason,” Pitman said.

He said that Jake and Simba are a loving couple, and that he thinks Jake is the more goofy and playful of the two.

“Simba is always happy to be right here,” Pitman said. “It’s just Simba. It seems to go with the flow. He follows Jake and looks at Jake rolling in the dirt and is like, ‘okay,’ and he’s coming soon.”

Pitman said spending nearly a year at the shelter was difficult for the puppies, but they maintained a happy attitude because they depended on each other.

“They’re still happy even though it’s been almost a year,” Pitman said. “I love going to the kennel and saying hello to them because their tails are always wagging. They keep me and everyone here in a good mood, especially when we’re going through tough times here.”

Jake and Simba’s adoption fee for this holiday season is “two for the price of one”. Both children are microchipped and spayed. They also have up-to-date vaccinations and are dewormed and given monthly heartworm medication.
