Christian Pulisic missed a glorious chance in the first half and the Netherlands went ahead thanks to two flowing moves when Memphis Depay completed a brilliant 20-pass sequence and then Daley Blind scored a carbon copy to make it 2-0 at half time.

The Netherlands will now face the winners of the USA and Australia in the quarterfinals, while the USA will go home with their heads held high and rich experience in their back pocket.
The future is bright but America must make the most of it
There is no shame in losing to this Dutch side. They have class in their squad and the likes of Memphis Depay, Frenkie de Jong, Virgil van Dijk and the best wings (Dumfries and Blind) have been quiet in the last 16. , looked unsatisfied and sloppy on the ball and unable to take their prime. Christian Pulisic missed a big chance in the first half and the Dutch took theirs. Their game plan then was to sit back and pick on the USA and that’s what they did. The experience and class of the Netherlands is evident but this game, and this tournament, has many positives for the USA.
They are a serious trainer from a deep run in 2026 and this young side will likely see seven or eight of the same starters on home soil as they have in Qatar. Gregg Berhalter is the manager of this page or not, that’s a discussion for another day (would an attacking formation be any different? The group of players can be put together with caution and America needs to do make the most of their 2022 experience and take another step forward for 2026 so they can compete with the top 10 teams in the world. They need to be more patient and calmer when their time. They exceeded expectations in Qatar but there is a sense of what is to come. That is a good thing. Although you will make the most of it next time.
Stars of the show
Denzel Dumfries: Good assist on the second goal and a good finish for the third. Often hit forward but also did his defensive work as he finished off the line. What a report from Inter Milan’s right winger.
Blind Daley: The other winger for the Netherlands had a great game as he scored and assisted and kept Weah and Dest on the other side. What a show from the old one.

Daley Blind made it 2-0 to the Netherlands at half-time. That’s sick for the #USMNT. Carbon copy of original target. Get to the byline and cut back to the penalty area to finish. #NED 2-0 #USA

Big time for Pulisic! He must have been busy.
Important stories, players to watch out for
The Netherlands is the fourth best team in the ELO Ratings and the eighth in the most contested FIFA, while the Yanks are 20th by ELO and 16th by FIFA.
So, the main story is if the performance of the favorites is related to the Dutch, to get that label against Ecuador, Senegal, and Qatar, and if the Yanks can reproduce their strength underdogs like they were against England.

The big question, of course, is whether Christian Pulisic is 100%, 75%, or less after the pelvic injury suffered by Iran. While Tim Weah is excellent and Sergino Dest and Antonee Robinson are impressive, Pulisic is no doubt the focus of America’s defense and attack. It will also be worth watching if Weston McKennie has a game-changing performance in this tournament, as the Juventus man returns to full World Cup fitness.
The Dutch fans were impressed by the performances of 23-year-old Cody Gakpo, who scored in every game. The back line of Virgil vsn Dijk, Jurrien Timber, and Nathan Ake was good, conceding one goal, while Matthijs de Ligt started the first game in place of Timber and Stefan de Vrij looms on the bench . With Frenkie de Jong in the center of the park, this Dutch team is very strong if Holland is not the wine.

Netherlands vs USA all time
The USMNT beat the Dutch in 2015 under Jurgen Klinsmann, trailing 1-0 and 3-1 before winning 4-3 with goals from Danny Williams and Bobby Wood in minutes. 89 and 90 to get the win. Gyasi Zardes and John Brooks also hit in the game.
The Dutch won four meetings before that and the five matches were friendlies that took place between 1998 and 2015.
Netherlands vs USA, World Cup history
The Dutch have never faced the United States before in the World Cup, and the home of Johan Cruyff has a very famous tournament history.
The Netherlands, like the USMNT, missed out on the 2018 tournament. That exit came after finishing third in 2014 and losing in the 2010 final to Spain. They have lost their last three finals, two in the mid-1970s, and have not lost a World Cup game apart from penalties since that 1-0 loss to Spain in 2010.
The USMNT’s best tournament run ended with a loss to Germany in the 2002 quarterfinals, but the Yanks have reached the knockout rounds three times in their World Cup appearances. They only won the knockout tournament in 2002.
