Baseball America Names RiverDogs 2022 Minor League Team of the Year

CHARLESTON, South Carolina – September, 2022 The Charleston RiverDogs proved they are at the top of the Carolina League by winning their second straight league title. The team was named the 2022 Minor League Team of the Year by Baseball America on Monday. This is the first time a franchise has received this kind of recognition.

After having the opportunity to watch them up close all season, I can say with complete confidence that the players and coaches deserve it,” said RiverDogs President and General Manager Dave Echols said. “Since our extension with Tampa Bay in 2021, our fans have enjoyed two incredible teams and two seasons.”

The 2022 RiverDogs have an 88-44 record and have won all four playoff games on the way. The 88 wins set a new franchise record and were the most by any team below Triple-A in the minor leagues, trailing only the Nashville Sounders, who played 17 more games. The team’s .667 winning percentage is the highest in the MiLB.

The RiverDogs’ offense has been explosive all season, using a ton of extras to do damage. The team’s 57 triples were the most in the MiLB, and their 120 home runs led the Carolina League. The offense also leads the league in batting average (.254), batting average (1,127), total bases (1,809), slugging percentage (.408) and OPS (.754). On the mound, the pitchers were equally dominant, posting a league-best 3.67 average. The RiverDogs ran 15 fewer runs than any other team on tour.

The roster is full of exciting young players, including several players who are widely regarded as the top prospects in the Rays organization. Shortstop Carson Williams was named a Carolina League All-Star and won the Rawlings® Gold Glove as the MiLB’s best defensive shortstop. Outfielder Shane Sasaki led the league in hits and was named to the All-Star team. Pitcher Austin Vernon claims to be the top pitcher in the Carolina League, going 9-1 with a 1.69 ERA and 91 strikeouts in 58.2 innings. Other top prospects for the Holy City include Cole Wilcox, Brock Jones, Mason Orr, Caminero Jr., Sandy Gaston, JJ Goss, Dominic Keegan, Ryan Spikes and Nick Bicko.
