No motive was given and Mr Horner is not believed to have had any relationship with the little girl.

The driver, identified by police as Tanner Lynn Horner, 31, is being held in the Wise County Jail on murder and aggravated kidnapping charges.

Pugh was with her parents when news broke that Athena had been found dead.

“I think he’s just a little numb,” Pugh said of her father’s reaction. “Frustrated, but he’s in good spirits.”

“Our hearts ache to learn that that child died,” he said. “This community doesn’t like losing our children, and we can see that because of all the people who came out to help us during this ordeal.”

Athena Strand, 7, left for school and returned to her home in Paradise, Texas, around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, the Wise County Sheriff’s Office said.

Her father left his wife and daughter at home to go hunting, and Athena allegedly got into an argument with her stepmother after she came home from school.

“We know there was some altercation last night between her and her stepmother, but it’s nothing out of the ordinary,” Wise County Sheriff Ryan Arkin said. “There was an argument, and then the stepmother went to prepare dinner and came back to fetch Athena, who was not in her room.”

At about 6:40 p.m., Athena’s stepmother called 911, who found the little girl was not in her bedroom, nor anywhere else in the house, after searching for her for an hour.

Police issued an Amber Alert and began a search for Athena. About 200 volunteers from the local community joined law enforcement officers to search through the night and into Thursday and Friday.

Athena’s body was found about 11 miles from her home.

“Our hearts ache knowing that the child died,” Sheriff Arkin said at a news conference Friday night. “It’s one of the toughest investigations I’ve ever been involved with because it’s a child. Anytime a child dies, it hits your heart.”

Tanner Horner is expected to appear in court on Monday for a detention hearing.

He was charged with aggravated kidnapping and murder of a minor under the age of 10 at 2 a.m. Friday in the Wise County Jail.
