Amber Heard settles Johnny Depp defamation case

Amber Heard announced Monday morning that she has decided to settle her ex-husband Johnny Depp’s defamation suit against her. Heard previously appealed the June ruling, which largely favored Depp but found each of the actors defamed the other.

“I have made this decision because I have lost faith in the American legal system, where my unprotected testimony has been fodder for entertainment and social media,” Heard wrote in a statement on Instagram.

The case stemmed from a 2018 article in which Heard, without naming anyone, described himself as a spokesperson for domestic violence. Depp, with whom Heard was legally married for two years, is suing her for $50 million, accusing her of defamation and that the article negatively affected his career.

After a week-long trial in Fairfax, Vern., earlier this year that took social media by storm and led to a variety of scathing comments online — much of the vitriol directed at Heard, often misogynistic — a jury awarded Depp $15 million. damages. Heard was awarded $2 million for one of three defamation claims by Adam Waldman, Depp’s lawyer.

In her statement, Heard wrote that she was vindicated by a “rigorous, impartial and fair system” in the United Kingdom, where Depp lost a defamation case in 2020 against the publisher of the British tabloid Sun, which called her a “wife beater.” ” referring to Hurd. Depp’s representatives have not yet responded to The Washington Post’s request for comment.

Depp returned to work after the trial. Soon after, he announced that he would be releasing an album with British guitarist Jeff Beck. Heard said that while her choice to plead was “not a concession,” the case has left her financially and emotionally drained. In settling the case, she wrote, “I also choose the freedom to devote my time to the work that helped me heal after my divorce; Work in areas I’ve seen, heard and believed in and where I know I can affect change.”
